Have you ever arrived home late from work to find the well-meaning babysitter just lifting your child out of the bath wrapped in the dog towel?  Or, maybe the opposite scenario has happened, you find a note from the dog walker saying, “Pooch got very muddy and dirty after jumping in the pond, I’ve wiped them off with the big, fluffy towel.  It’s in front of the washing machine.”  As much as you love your dog, that towel is the pastel Egyptian cotton bath sheet you treated yourself to recently and you’re now hoping it’s not stained.

Of course, it may just be that you want the best for your dog and a personalised towel for him or her seems like a perfect idea.  Whatever your reason for wanting to buy a personalised towel, they are actually a really good idea when you think about it. They are practical and hygienic and by having a personalised towel, there is no mistaking which one is the dog’s towel.

There is an age-old argument concerning the dog crate. When the crate comes to mind, it’s easy to imagine a little one confined to a jail cell-like cage for most of the day! This is an unfortunate reality for many sheltered or neglected animals around the world.

It’s still only one reality! As long as it is used responsibly, the dog crate can be an extremely useful tool. In some cases, it can even save your pet’s life! Jack Russell crate training is integral.

Why Use a Dog Crate for Your Jack Russell?

There are several reasons for you to use a dog crate for your Jack Russell!

Safety

Dog crates are integral for puppy safety while you can’t offer direct supervision. Anyone who has ever raised a puppy will agree- the little ones will find trouble wherever it is to be found!

You could wind up with all kinds of choking hazards, destroyed wiring, and shredded bedding if you aren’t careful. You’ll want to be aware of any small spaces your pup can get himself stuck in. Not even the paint on your walls is safe from those little shark teeth!

A dog crate acts a little like a crib for a human baby, keeping your puppy safe while you can’t directly observe him.

Potty Training

Your dog’s crate can be a powerful potty-training tool! Dogs are naturally somewhat tidy animals. Unless they have grown used to caged life in a shelter, most dogs will prefer not to eliminate in confined spaces or sleeping areas.

Leashing a puppy directly by your side at all times is the preferable method during potty training. This way you’re able to catch and quickly correct any mistakes. If that isn’t possible, the Jack Russell crate is a second useful option!

Remember, puppies will need to eliminate at an average of once per hour of every month of age (until about 4 or five months). So, a 12-week old puppy will need to be let outside once every three hours.

Own Little Escape!

If your Jack Russell crate training is done properly, your little one will freely enter the crate. It will serve the same function as a dog den, offering shelter and security when your little one feels overwhelmed.

At least that is how your pet will view it!

Your dog might escape to the crate if he wants a better night’s sleep, or just wants to be left alone. His crate might make him feel better when fireworks or loud cracks of thunder have him on edge.

  • For this to work, you don’t want to use the dog crate as a punishment.
  • Try not to bother your dog while he’s in the crate.
  • Only associate positivity with the crate.

What size Crate for a Jack Russell?

What sized crate is best for a Jack Russell Terrier? You don’t want to keep having to buy dog crates!

You’re buying for a small breed. Your Jack will be a short adult, and shouldn’t weigh much more than an average of 13-17 pounds. He’ll need enough room to comfortably stand up and turn around completely.

You might want to offer a little bit extra for toys or food/water bowls, but there’s no need to go overboard here! A 24” tall crate would probably be good for an adult Russell.

But what if you want to use the Jack Russell dog crate for potty training? You might not want to start out with an adult-sized crate. At the same time, you don’t want to throw away money by constantly upgrading.

Invest in a crate with a partition in the middle! You can remove the partition and double your pup’s room as he grows. You’re still able to purchase one adult-sized crate this way, and never have to upgrade.

Recommended Jack Russell Crates from Amazon

So, what type of Jack Russell Crate do you want to invest in? You certainly don’t want to continuously spend money on inferior items only for them to break down!

MidWest Homes for Pets Dog Crate

MidWest 1530 iCrate Single-Door Pet Crate 30-By-19-By-21-Inch
  • 30L X 19W X 21H Inches
  • Ideal for pets 26 to 40 pounds
  • Single Door. Fold and Carry Configuration for portability

With over 110,000 reviews, the MidWest Homes for Pets dog crate is probably one of the most purchased crates on Amazon! You’re able to choose between seven sizes, and there is even a breed chart to help you out.

This is nearly the same build I have for my own Jack Russel mix! Since Loki is a mixed breed, I wasn’t sure exactly how large he would grow and went with a large crate. It was a little costly, but the price was well worth it! Both Loki and my Beagle Vali are able to fit comfortably at once.

If that weren’t enough, this dog crate will probably outlast all three of us! The metal design is extremely durable. It’s the only dog crate we will ever need, so the initial expense was less money than may have been spent otherwise.

  • The metal design is extremely durable
  • Comes with partition included
  • Easy to assemble
  • Foldable for transport
  • Can use the partition for puppies, remove for adults

Always Provide Fresh Water

Though some dog treats aren’t made with salt, many are. Too much salt/sodium added to the existing content in your dog’s food can cause a dog without constant access to freshwater to dehydrate.

Extreme hypernatremia creates an electrolyte imbalance, which will, in turn, create more issues than the low circulatory volume from dehydration or excess urination. Salt poisoning is often directly related to water consumption (Merk Veterinary Manual).

If you’re out hiking on the trail, bring a travel water bowl and a water bottle. You can also check out one of these fantastic dog-specific water bottles!

Watch the Carbs & Calories

The best dog treats for Jack Russell Terriers won’t go overboard with the calories! Remember, these dog treats are only adding to your dog’s existing diet, which is unfortunately already unhealthy for many domesticated pets.

The Grey wolves our domestic dogs descended from don’t have much nutritional need for carbohydrates. Unlike humans, they would derive most of their energy from fat stores. Today’s dogs have adapted to a human lifestyle, but don’t have the same need for carbs we do.

It’s easy to forget about carbohydrates and calories with tiny dog treats!

  • Carbohydrates: 4 cals/gram
  • Protein: 4 cals/gram
  • Fat: 9 cals/gram

Increase the Reward Value

Instead of purchasing my regular dog treats at the pet store, I mistakenly bought a smaller package of regular dog kibble, mistakenly thinking they were small training rewards! There wasn’t anything special about them, but I didn’t want to let them go to waste.

Even though these small bits of kibble probably didn’t taste any different to my dogs, I was able to increase their value to that of our regular treats!

We will often play “Hide and Seek” games. My dogs absolutely love them because they are very enriching. I would reward them with these small bits of kibble, making them seem like the best things in the world!

  • Use plenty of enthusiastic praise
  • Don’t over reward, or the “treats” may begin to lose their value
  • Act physically excited about your new dog treats

What are the Best Dog Treats for Jack Russell Training?

Depending on the type of dog training you’re doing, you might be handing out several dog treats at a time! Though the calories might not seem like much, they can quickly add up.

The best dog treats for Jack Russell training don’t necessarily need to taste fantastic, though that is important and will make rewarding easier. If you’re creative, you can use a few psychological strategies to increase the value of these rewards in your dog’s mind.

More importantly, dog treats should be healthy! You want to avoid weight gain. If you’re teaching your dog something like agility, the added caloric intake would be counter-productive to the point of the exercise.

More calories are fine if you only offer the treat as an occasional reward.

Jack Russell Puppy Feeding Guide

Jack Russell Puppy Feeding Guide

Imagine this tiny, squirming 6-pound Jack Russell pup you’ve just brought home. He’s so small and delicate! It’s hard to believe this tiny guy will grow an adult roughly three times that size.

What in the world will you feed him? Is puppy food really more important than adult food, and what kind is best? How many meals should he have, and will this change over time?

Jack Russell Puppy Feeding Guide

You’ve just brought your Jack Russell puppy home! While he becomes accustomed to this new environment, you’ll need to figure out how meals will go. This is probably a sinch if you’re a veteran dog owner, but first-timers might be a little confused.

Importance of Puppy Food

If you compare a puppy and adult dog food of the same brand, it might be hard to tell the difference. Why in the world would you buy puppy food anyway? Why not just go with great adult dog food?

Your puppy is growing fast. He or she will need specific nutrients to support that growth. Specifically, your little one will need more protein to support that growth.

Most puppy foods are formulated to provide a higher percentage of protein, compared to their adult counterparts. According to the Association of American Feed Control Officials, you’re looking at 22% or more protein in puppy food vs. 18% in adult food.

There also needs to be a higher percentage of fat in puppy food, along with more calcium and less sodium. The percentages above are minimum requirements, and you’ll probably find higher protein percentages in good puppy food brands.

Puppy food bites will also be smaller and easier to digest.

  • Make sure you’re feeding your pup standard or small breed puppy food. You don’t want to give your Jack too much calcium at this stage.

Pro Tip: Mash your puppy’s food up with some water to make wet food so it is easier to eat and digest.

7-8 Weeks

To avoid any GI upset, you’ll want to keep your little guy on the same food his breeder was providing before. If you are absolutely convinced something else is better, slowly transition to the new food by mixing portions over time.

You’ll want to give your pup 3-4 small meals a day! Many human children eat at least three meals a day, so this should be easy. 4 meals are ideal. Remember to set a consistent feeding schedule!

Though they may be a small breed, Jack Russell Terriers have a lot of energy and very fast metabolism.

12 weeks (3 Months)

You can begin to decrease your puppy’s meals from 4 to 3 daily soon. Keep feeding three meals until your pup is 6 months old. At that point, you can switch to two meals daily.

Your Jack’s meals will add up to an average of 1.5 cups daily. Be sure to look at your dog food package’s feeding instructions!

You can move to one meal per day at 12 months, but it isn’t recommended for such a high-energy breed.

Transitioning to Adult Food

Though many breeds are considered puppies until hitting the two-year mark, you can probably begin transitioning your Jack Russell to adult food around a year. Most Jack Russell Terrier puppies will reach their full growth at around 12 months.

Recommended Jack Russell Puppy Food Brands

It can be hard to settle on a good puppy food formula with all of the options available to you at your local pet store. Advertising is often deceptive. Many people don’t know what to do, so they settle for the least costly brands they can find.

There’s no need to worry because we’ve done the research for you. Take a look at three of the best Jack Russell puppy food brands available on the market today!

ORIJEN Puppy Dog Food

Orijen is by far one of the highest quality manufactured dog food brands you’ll find! About 85% of their formulas are composed of animal products, which is exactly what you should see. They don’t neglect fruits and vegetables either. You’ll also get high quallity organ meats as well as various types of fish!

  • 38% protein
  • 18% fat

Farmina Natural And Delicious Chicken/Ancestral Low-Grain Puppy Formula

Most of the animal protein here is derived from chicken, although you’ll see several high quality ingredients! About 60% of this formula is composed of animal-based ingredients. Farmina is listed as the number one puppy food with dogfoodadvisor, receiving 5 stars.

  • 38% protein

Human Food?

While many of us are guilty of giving in and treating our adults with the occasional scrabs and leftovers, don’t do this with your puppy. Don’t feed your Jack Russell pup anything but puppy food designed for him.

Your puppy is especially vulnerable to intestinal illnesses, which can lead to vomiting and diarrhea. Because the little one is so small, he or she needs every little bit of that circulatory volume.

Interesting Fact: Countless puppies succumb to Parvovirus, causing them intense fluid loss until they lapse into hypovolemic shock and ultimately pass. Without treatment, recovery rates are extremely low. Vaccinations are crucial for your puppy!

Treats and Chews

This will depend on the type of treats, as long as they were designed for dogs and healthy. You’ll want to limit the number of treat rewards you offer while ensuring proper nutrition. Many store-bought dog treats are not nutritious!

You’re in the middle of potty training, for example. You want to reward your puppy for successful outdoor eliminations. It’s ok to treat your puppy! The praise you shower your pup with will also probably be just as effective at this early age and is always recommended.

Jack Russell Feeding Guide

Jack Russell Feeding Guide

What exactly is the best food for a Jack Russell terrier, and is it any different than other breeds? With so many selections at the pet store, how will you ever decide?

Take a look at our Jack Russell Feeding Guide here!

Carnivores and Animal Meat

Take a look at your dog. His teeth are pointed and are designed by nature to grab, hold and tear at animal meat, not grind like our human teeth.

All of his main senses, whether they be smell, hearing, or even sight, have evolved over hundreds of thousands of years- from the very first Wolf species- to augment his very powerful tracking and hunting skills.

Common sense will tell you nature intended dogs to thrive off of animal products. Fruits, vegetables and even grains have a role to play but aren’t as important.

Though dogs are scientifically classified as carnivores, they aren’t true obligate carnivores in the way cats are. Meat isn’t absolutely essential, and they probably won’t die without it. Your Jack can easily become malnourished on a poorly designed vegan diet, however!

“But why does it have to be meat?” you ask. “Why not plant protein?”

The answer lies mostly with the type of essential amino acids these proteins are built from. Essential amino acids are amino acids your dog needs to find in his diet, and his body can’t create on its own.

Most of the essential amino acids your dog needs in his diet can be found in meat products, whereas they are harder to find in fruits and vegetables.

Fruits and Vegetables are Still Important.

This doesn’t mean you want to feed your dog solely meats! Fruits and vegetables also offer valuable nutrients. Even grains are important. These shouldn’t make up the main percentage of your dog’s diet, but any high quallity diet will include its fair share of fruits and vegetables.

Wet vs Dry Dog Food

What in the world is the difference between these two? Why would one be recommended over the other? Should you opt for dry or wet dog food?

The main difference between wet and dry dog food is moisture content. Wet dog food is going to be much higher in moisture content, benefiting dogs that struggle with hydration or are experiencing digestion difficulties.

You might supplement your pet’s diet with wet food in a very hot or humid climate.

Older dogs that experience difficulties chewing may benefit from a wet food diet. Dental hygiene can become more problematic, so you might want to get in the habit of brushing your pup’s teeth.

Some breeders might transition their pups from mother’s milk to wet food before progressing to dry puppy food.

On the flip side, your Jack Russell might need to eat twice (or more) the amount of wet food to achieve the same level of nutrition the dry counterpart might offer.

There are pros and cons to each!

ORIJEN Original Grain-Free Dry Dog Food

Orijen is a premium quallity, top of the line manufactured dry dog food and one of the absolute best I’ve ever seen! All you have to do is take a look at the ingredient list to tell why. Not only are all of the upper ingredients premium, but you also won’t see a low quallity source among them.

  • Orijen also offers a small breed formula. This food above is marketed for dogs 25 lb. +.

Taste of the Wild Dry Dog Food With Roasted Venison

Novel protein sources like venison and lamb make up the bulk of this high quallity brand. On top of that, your small breed food consists of smaller bite-sized kibble for your Jack’s smaller mouth. You want your dry dog food to be rich in both proteins and fat while limiting the carbohydrates compared to others.

Merrick Classic Healthy Grains Small Breed Recipe

Deboned chicken is the primary ingredient here, followed by chicken meal. Deboned meats are easier on a dog’s digestion, while a ‘meal’ is a concentrated source of meat protein. Omega fatty acids help support your pup’s skin and coat health, while other nutrients support joint health!

Quantity of Food

Exactly how many calories should your Jack Russell Terrier get? There are far too many variables to give you a perfect answer for your particular dog! This will depend upon things like:

  • Age
  • Activity level
  • Size

Thankfully, you can calculate the average resting energy requirements for your little one, if the math doesn’t bother you. This is again just an average estimation.

(Dog’s body weight in kg) raised to the ¾ power,  multiplied by 70

Example: A 10 kg (22 lb) Jack Russell Terrier adult would need 400 calories daily, according to this formula. Of course, this is on the larger side for a Jack!

Then there are further calculations that can be made to better specify this number. You can find those calculations here (Ohio State University).

Meals Per Day

You’ll want to split your feedings into two meals per day, for a healthy Jack Russell Terrier adult. This is normally split into 1.5 cups daily, but you’ll want to refer to your individual dog food packaging instructions.

Treats and Chews

What about dog treats and chews? These offer extremely useful training tools if nothing else! Can you offer too much though?

Too Many Carbs

You do want to watch the carbohydrates you offer your dog. Excess carbs can lead to weight gain, which can, in turn, open the door to a wealth of medical complications.

Believe it or not, an estimated 40% of adult dogs are already considered at least overweight in the United States! 25-30% of our domesticated canine populace is considered obese (VCA), which amounts to several million dogs.

Your manufactured dog food brand almost certainly already offers well over the number of carbohydrates a wild canid would get from his natural diet. Still, your dog should be fine with adequate exercise (which many never get, as you can see from the statistics above).

Then you are adding extra caloric sources like human treats or dog treats.

If you’re going to offer treat rewards, look for small ‘training rewards’ that come in packages of 500 or so. Your dog will lose his mind, while you’re able to keep those calories limited at the same time! You still want to limit the amount you hand out, even with these.

Watch the Sodium

Too much sodium/salt can not only lead to dehydration, but cause other medical issues also. Just like carbohydrates, you’re adding sodium to your dog’s recommended amount with every treat or bit of human food.

Normally this still wouldn’t be too much of a problem as long as your Jack Russell always has access to fresh, clean, cool drinking water. Unfortunately, many dog owners choose to limit their pet’s access to water, only offering it at certain times.

While it isn’t healthy to allow a dog to ‘free-feed’, you really shouldn’t limit access to drinking water.

Older Dogs & Weight Gain

A dog’s metabolism will begin to slow as he or she ages, just like ageing humans Your older dog will probably become less energetic, and won’t have the same desire for play and exercise. Wear and tear on those joints will become more apparent, leading to conditions like arthritis.

Exercise and proper nutrition are both even more important in older dogs!

I have owned several Jack Russells in my lifetime and as a general rule, they are not really particularly smelly dogs. When I get asked ‘do Jack Russells smell?’ I always say that it does depend on the dog! Short haired Jack Russells are the least smelly because their fur is short and easy to keep clean.

Generally Jack Russells don’t smell

As a general rule, Jack Russells are not the smelliest of dogs compared to most other breeds. Their fur is short and coarse and if they have a regular diet they shouldn’t stink too much. However, there are always certain things to watch out for though including smelly farts and rolling in fox poo!

Doggy Fur Smell

Do Jack Russells smell? Sometimes your Jack Russell can start to smell….well….doggish!

Sometime their fur just starts to harbour odours and get very wet and dank, giving that damp fur or doggish smell. If this is the case, consider bathing your Jack Russell. Its always a good idea to use a kind dog shampoo or even a dog flea shampoo. You don’t need to bath your Jack Russell more than every 3-6 months really. They certainly shouldn’t be having a bath on a weekly or monthly basis because this can strip their fur of it’s natural oils.

Smelly farts

Some Jack Russells stink when they eat certain foods! The only way to really find out what works is to try out different foods to see which one suits your dog. Low residue dog foods can minimise farts and poop, so they are a good option to consider. Remember though, always change your dogs diet under your vets advice and supervision.

  • Designed to help dogs with poor or sensitive digestion

Sometimes their farts can stink more when they eat ‘human food’ or rich treats such as sausage. It’s best to avoid giving your Jack Russell treats under the table. It will teach him or her to beg for food but also could disrupt his usual digestion and result in extremely stinky farts – sometimes ones that smell like rotten eggs!

Rolling in Fox Poo

If you’re JRT rolls in Fox Poo, BEWARE!!!!

Sorry, but it will absolutely stink!

Stop your dog from doing this if you can, but if your pooch goes off lead then it’s not always possible!

If your dog has rolled in fox poo then you will need to wash him or her straight away. Wash him outside with a hose or Mud Daddy if you can (usually best in the summer months). If you need to bring your dog inside the house to be washed, carry him straight to the bathroom without letting him touch anything!

Choosing a dog harness for a Jack Russell

Choosing a dog harness for a Jack Russell

jackrussellworld.co.uk is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program and other affiliate advertising programs designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites. Affiliate links may be used on this page and in jackrussellworld.co.uk articles, but they do not impact on the price that you pay.

Choosing a dog harness for a Jack Russell may be a bit challenging. If you have a very energetic and active dog, you might need to use a comfortable fit harness that will allow it ample running room. But if your Jack Russell is calmer and has a smaller build, then a snug fitting harness will be more appropriate. Today’s article is all about choosing a dog harness for a Jack Russell – it’s one of the most important dog essentials that you will buy.

Things to consider when choosing a dog harness for Jack Russell

There are many other factors that need to be considered when purchasing a dog harness for your pet. Your dog’s age is one important factor. Puppies are not yet full grown adults and you should take this into account when choosing a harness type for them.

The type of dog harness you choose for your Jack Russell depends on the activities that will be done with it. There are dog harnesses made especially for jogging and hiking while others work well for dogs that need more controlling.

The Size of your dog is probably the most important thing to consider, because a harness needs to be well fitting to be comfortable, secure and to serve its purpose.

Choose one that is made of durable materials and can withstand the demands of a normally active dog. You must make sure that the harness is comfortable for your pet as it will be wearing it all day long while running around or doing other activities. Your Jack Russell may not like a very tight fitting harness, so you need to make sure that he or she can easily breath in it at all times and not feel stressed and uncomfortable.

Finally, you can also consult your veterinarian about choosing a harness for your pet if you are unsure on what type to get.

Dog Harness Buying Guide: Measuring for Size

Your pet needs to enjoy wearing it and not feel fidgety or frustrated with it on its body. To fit your dogs harness properly, you need to measure around your dogs neck and chest. Most dog harnesses have a size guide with them so do check that.

What is the best dog harness for a Jack Russell?

How to Wash Dog Harness – Pet Care Tips

You should remember that you need to be gentle with your dog when washing a dog harness. The reason is simple enough- they’re dogs after all. Washing a dog harness is easier than you might think, but the method can depend on the type of harness and material used to make it.

Because there are many different types of dog harnesses available, you need to follow specific instructions for washing each one.

Cleaning a leather or nylon dog harness

The important thing when it comes to washing a dog harness that is made of either leather or nylon is to not put the entire harness in a machine. Instead, you should only wash specific parts of the harness as needed.

If your dog’s harness has any metal pieces like buckles or D-Rings, they can be washed by hand using mild soap and lukewarm water. If the metal parts are special and sensitive, it’s best to take them to a dry cleaner instead.

Making sure your dog is safe

You need to be careful when washing any type of dog harness that has buckles or D-Rings. The buckles can get stuck in the machine if you do not know exactly how to remove them properly. You can always ask an employee at your local dry cleaners for help if you are not sure what to do.

The buckles or D-rings can become stuck in the washing machine and you must be careful how you take them out. A large rubber band works well for this situation so that you do not lose.

What is an Extendable Lead?

An extendable lead, also known as a telescopic or retractable dog lead, is a type of dog leash that can be lengthened or shortened with the click of a handle. A leading pole , with similar functionality, extends from the same place on the collar instead of being attached to it. However, a leading pole’s retractable line is attached to the centre of its handle rather than on its end. There are different types of extendable dog leads available, including those that use bungee cords, springs, gears and levers to enable them to expand and retract.

Extendable dog leads are an option for owners who want an alternative to fixed-length leashes that might not be long enough when their dog pulls ahead or too long if they dogs stay by their side. They’re particularly helpful for training retrievers, who may need to work at various distances from their handler.

As the name suggests, an extendable dog lead is suited to dogs that are well-behaved on a leash and do not tend to pull when they walk. However, this type of leash does not solve all common problems related to poor walking habits in dogs.

Which Extendable Lead Should I Choose?

The most common type uses a spring-loaded handle that can be lengthened by depressing it and pulling the cord. The lead goes from an attachment on the collar to the end of its line and then retracts when the owner releases it, which pulls the loop back to close to its original size. Some extendable dog leads are made from coated or braided metal and use a handle that is pushed in to lengthen, but others are built entirely out of bungee cord and expand when they are pulled.

Some retractable dog leads can be adjusted so the owner chooses what length it becomes. They might have different settings between one and three or five metres (3.3 or 5.5 yards), which are the most useful lengths for walking dogs in public spaces like sidewalks and parks.

Extendable dog leads with a maximum length of between one and two metres (3.3 – 6.5 feet) can be used to walk dogs in small areas, including their own backyard, on an enclosed patio or in a home with limited space.

The long lines may be useful for keeping dogs away from busy roads and ensuring the safety of those around them.

Advantages of Extendable Leads

The advantages to this type of lead are that it can keep dogs away from danger, and they don’t have to strain their necks to keep up with their owners. It also lets them wander a little bit more freely when they want, since the line is flexible and can retract at any time. Owners may be able to use this kind of lead to control their pets while they’re walking them on a crowded sidewalk or in other areas where there are lots of people or animals around.

Disadvantages of Extendable Leads

A well-trained dog on an extendable lead can learn to pay attention to their owner, walk by their side or slightly in front, and will not pull on the line. Owners should reward them when this happens with food treats or something they value like toys. They could also give them a quick tug on the leash if they start pulling.

But if the dog carries on pulling or begins to walk in reverse, it signals an ineffective training regimen. It may mean that the owner needs to train them more thoroughly. If a dog always pulls and their owner uses an extendable lead, they can become frustrated and lose faith in their pet’s ability to learn. They might end up abandoning training altogether.

An extendable dog lead may have more disadvantages than advantages if used with a dog who is not well-behaved on a leash. These are some of the problems that might arise from using one:

  • Extendable leads, especially those made of rubber or coated wire, can be difficult to control and could hurt the user’s hands if they accidentally give them a sharp tug.
  • A dog may follow the lead to the end and pull on empty space. The line could get wrapped around objects, cars or other dogs.
  • An extendable lead can be tough for inexperienced handlers to use properly. A poorly trained dog might take advantage of this and keep pulling anyway, or they might pull against the extendable line with more force than usual.
  • Dogs may become distracted by their surroundings and decide to run off or chase other animals, even if their owner is close by.
  • An extendable lead can be difficult to use in narrow or crowded spaces like elevators, stairwells, store aisles or hallways, as the line is fixed to a pole.
  • A dog’s body gets tangled up with the lead and its handle if it runs past the length limit of an extendable leash. The owner might have to chase them up or down stairs while holding onto the awkwardly curving handle rather than having both hands free to help them climb.
  • An extendable dog lead can be dangerous if it breaks apart after being pulled too hard. A dog could get tangled up in the cord or a person could injure themselves reaching for it.

Top Tips for using an Extendable Lead

If you decide to use an extendable lead for your dog here are some top tips to help you to use it safely and effectively:

  • Choose a strong and durable well made extendable lead. Cheap ones are likely to snap and break easily which is dangerous – you may lose your dog.
  • Wear jeans! These extendable leads can cause painful friction burns when your dog runs and pulls it fast
  • Avoid using an extendable lead on footpaths near roads – this is dangerous if the clip releases by accident as your dog could run out into traffic.
  • Don’t let them greet other dogs also on extendable leads – they will probably tangle each other up!
  • Attach the extendable lead to a harness rather than his collar to prevent jolts to the neck when your dog reaches the end of the line. We like to use the perfect fit harness with our Jack Russell cross.
