‘Does a Jack Russell shed?’ I hear you ask! I’ve always been a Jack Russell parent, and our short-haired boy Milo so badly that in some summer months I was hoovering almost every day! The reality is that some Jack Russells shed more than others. For example, my black and tan Jack Russell Suzy and my brown Patterjack (Patterdale Cross) shed much less hair than my classic tri-colour Jack Russell. The main problem with the classic Jack Russell is that with the bulk of their coat being white, it REALLY shows up on everything! I was rarely able to leave the house without feeling like I was wearing half of my dog!!!! You might find that a roller comes in handy in removing dog hair from your clothes and furniture.

Jack Russell Grooming
The most important thing you can do for your dog is to provide them with plenty of regular grooming. When you are Jack Russell grooming, use a slicker brush on their coat which will break up dead hair and redistribute oils. This will help you avoid tangles in those long fur strands too. A short haired Jack Russell only really needs grooming once a week for just a couple of minutes. The loose hair will then end up on your brush rather than on your carpet or clothes! My Favourite Jack Russell Games
Sniffing Games
My Jack Russells have all love to play ‘find it’ where you show the dog a treat (let him/her sniff it) then shut the dog out of the room and hide a treat somewhere. When the treat is hidden, and he has had a sniff so knows what he is looking for he will use his nose and start searching. My Jack Russells usually find the treat between 15 seconds and 3 minutes depending on how well hidden the treat is and how smelly the treat is! This is one of my favourite Jack Russell games as it’s fun for all the family to watch.
The main fabric is soft, durable and safe polar fleece, filled with PP cotton.
Hide dry food in it for dogs who eat too quickly, so you can reduce the quick entwined without chewing.
Safe TRP toy in corn, dogs can bite it or grind their teeth.
If you want to take this a step further you can actually buy snuffle mats for dogs, which are rag mats that have lots of places to hide treats in – these work wonders when you go out and want to leave your dog something to do.
Most Jack Russells love to play fetch and tennis balls are the most popular choice. First you need to assess whether your JRT is interested in balls – some are, some aren’t, but you will see instantly when you get the ball moving if he loves it! Sometimes you can have a Jack Russell who loves to fetch the ball but won’t give it back!

With Milo, we used to have two balls on the go on rotation, because he would bring and release the first ball when he saw the second one ready to throw! Football
Yes it’s true, I’ve had two Jack Russells in my lifetime that were absolutely brilliant at football – Patch and Milo. Make sure that it is a sturdy football and that they are supervised with it. Then you can take them into the garden or to a safe enclosed field and have a kick around. They will get a lot of energy out when they chase it.
We love to use Nina Ottosson dog puzzles for our Jack Russells. Your dog has to learn how to twist and turn them to get to the treats. It stimulates them mentally and physically. These puzzles have different levels from 1 (easiest) to 3 (hard) and so you can start with the easy and when they have mastered that one increase the difficulty by progressing to the next level.

One of the main problems I have found with plush dog toys for Jack Russells is that if they are not sturdy, they will destroy them! There are several factors to consider when choosing a Jack Russell bed. Are you going to go for traditional dog bed or an igloo type bed? Or are you going to crate train your dog? What kind of fabric do you want for your dog bed? Hardy plastic may be a better option if your Jack Russell is a chewer (which many are).
Measure your Dog for the Bed Size!
Also consider your dogs size – big enough for him to lie comfortable and stretch his legs out a bit, but small enough for him to feel cosy! Measure your dogs ‘sprawl’ which is the full length of your dog when his front and back legs are spread out. The calculation will include measuring his front legs, body length (nose to start of tail)and back legs and then adding those together – that’s the maximum that he will want to spread out in his bed. Jack Russells need a great deal of exercise. This should be a combination of on lead and off lead walks, extended time to run free in the garden or open space (if their recall is good enough!) and indoor exercise through games.
How much walking does a Jack Russell Need?
Small dogs like Jack Russell Terriers actually need just as much exercise as their larger counterparts (if not more!). For instance, a Jack Russell will need two 45-minute walks a day and some time to play. Extended walkies on weekends away wouldn’t go amiss. Were talking about Snodonia and Peak district hikes rather than just a walk in the local park! My last Jack Russell Milo lived with me in Manchester. We would often walk for about three hours in the Pennines on a Sunday afternoon. Only then would he start to tire!
Off Lead Time and Why it is important
They also need at least an hour in the backyard or at the dog park to run free. The lead free exercise gives them a chance to run at their own speed which is important for getting their energy out. If your JRT likes to play fetch or frisbee that is a great way to exercise your dog.
Indoor Dog Games
You can supplement this outdoor exercise with indoor Jack Russell games. They love to play sniffing games and indoor fetch. Also many Jack Russells like a bit of rough and tumble play such as a tug-o-war with their ragga! Most of my Jack Russells have what we call a ‘happy hour!’ just before bedtime. Around 10pm they seem to have an energy spurt that they need to expel with a race around the house or a wrestle!
What do I need to Exercise my Jack Russell?
Make sure that you are fully set up with the dog essentials that you need to exercise your Jack Russell. You will need a good collar and harness. It’s a good idea to have a variety of leads (long and short) for different types of walkies. Also get plenty of toys to play indoors and outside with your dog.
Harness
Make sure that you get a strong sturdy harness such as a Julius K9 harness. These are good because the dogs body takes the strain of the lead and you are not yanking him around by the neck. But there is a time and a place for collar walkies such as street walks where you need to have more control of the direction of his head.

Leads
We have several types of lead for our JRT – a short one for full control on street walks, a training lead that we can change the length of and a long rope lead (30m) for exercising, training and recall. It seems that for Jack Russell terriers one lead just isn’t enough!

Make sure that you find out what your dog really loves to play with. Flirt poles are great for JRTs who are very prey driven. They are also safe as the toy is kept away from the person’s body so there is less risk of accidental nipping.

Top Tips on Jack Russell Exercise
It is sometimes difficult to get your Jack Russell the exercise they need. Sometimes there is just too much work to do, or perhaps you would like more time with your dog but are afraid he will destroy the house while you are gone. If you have problems with getting your Jack Russell enough exercise, here are some tips:
Let your dog outside in the yard. Some people put their dogs in a run in their yard. This gives the dog room to run around and play and they can still remain outside without having access to the entire neighborhood. This is great during cold or rainy weather, and it works well for periods of time when you can’t get your Jack Russell outdoors.
If you are going to be gone longer than usual, take the dog along with you. Take your dog with you when running errands if there is room in the car. You’ll be giving them great exercise while doing things you would have done anyway; this will help save time and money later on as you won’t have to pay someone else to walk the dog or deal with him misbehaving when he’s stuck at home.
Use a small dog harness. This will allow your Jack Russell to walk comfortably and still get some exercise from just being led around the house.
Get your dog a large dog bed. You can put this in the living room, next to the couch, so the Jack Russell can get some rest on a nice warm bed after a long day of playing. This will give them some rest and save you from buying one for them.
In the hot weather you might want to consider getting a dog cooling mat.

Jacks are famous for being “little big dogs.” They have a persistent, energetic, bold personality. They can be dominant dogs who fight to be the leader of the pack. Not only are some Russells natural hunters, but they also like to chase and sometimes kill other small animals. This means that it’s especially important to train your terrier.
They are VERY energetic and will need exercising at least twice a day for a minimum of 30 minutes. This needs to be combined with off-lead time for them to run around and let off steam. Jack Russells are Great Companions
The best thing about the Jack Russell personality is that they are extremely loyal to their owner. They like to be with their owner whenever possible. This is why they make great lapdogs and good companion animals. They can be good with children if they are well trained and grow up with them. However, children need to be taught how to treat the dog with respect. And of course, never leave a child alone with a Jack Russell.

When it comes time for potty training, start off easy by using a crate. The Jack Russell will go in one corner while you’re around but won’t soil his sleeping area. He’ll learn that peeing or pooping elsewhere is what gets him into trouble; going in his corner will get him out of it!

You may decide to train your terrier straight into going outside. We did that with both of the Jack Russells we adopted as adults and they literally picked it up within a couple of days. Toilet training should be an easy process with a pup who’s smart and learns quickly.
They hate being left alone, so if you’re going to work all day or travel, be sure to crate them or keep them company in a room with you while you go about your morning routine and make lunch.
Jacks are Independent and can be Troublesome!
Jacks have an independent streak that will probably lead them into trouble at some point. They can be goofy and mischievous. They also have a tendency to want to chase smaller animals, so it’s important to socialize them early on with cats, rabbits and other dogs if you’ll ever have a pet like this around. You’ll also want them to learn that chasing other dogs will get them into trouble, so make sure he socialises with friendly ones when you’re out walking.
When it comes time for training your Jack Russell, start him off easy and work up to harder tasks. It’s a good idea to use a clicker to mark the correct behaviour so he’ll know what you want. Jack Russells are very independent and although they are very trainable indoors, training because a massive challenge when you step outside! Don’t train too hard and always end on a positive note. A Jack Russell will not respond well to harsh training methods. On the other hand, praise will go far with this breed; results come faster if he gets his treat every time he does his business in the right place!
One way to keep your Jack Russell occupied and entertained is with a toy that involves treats. You can also do the same with food by putting his kibble into an empty pill bottle and threading it through a hole in the lid. His Jack Russell terrier personality will get him digging and pawing at it until he figures out how to get the food out! Other good toys for this breed are those that have a treat inside, such as a KONG.

To start, you’ll want to decide what type of coat your Jack Russell has. Most dogs come in three primary types: short hair, medium hair and long hair. Not all breeds fall into these categories; Shih Tzus, for example, have long hair even though they aren’t very large dogs. Moreover, some dogs fall into more than one category as their coat may change as they grow older. The best way to determine what kind of coat your dog has is to feel along their back and neck. If the hair feels smooth and lies flat near their skin, then your dog probably has a short hair coat. If the hair is thicker, but still lies flat, then your dog may have a medium hair coat. Lastly, if the hair feels coarse and sticks out from the dog’s skin even when they’re not touching it, your dog probably has a long hair coat.
Jack Russell Grooming – How often?
If you have a short haired Jack Russell you may find that brushing him just once a fortnight is plenty. My current brown smooth haired Jack Russell cross rarely needs brushing and we probably only do him once a month! My previous tri-coloured Jack Russell moulted a lot more and we used to take him to the pooch parlour at the start of the summer to get his hair stripped and trimmed when his coat was changing. This kept him nice and cool in the summer months.
If you’ve got a short haired Jack Russell, you may never need to take him to the grooming salon if you are on top of quarterly baths and fortnightly brushing. If you live in a hot country you may like to get his fur stripped for the summer and if you have a long haired Jack Russell you will probably find that you do need to visit the salon (although only maybe a few times a year).
Grooming your Jack Russell at Home
You can also do this grooming in the comfort of your own home with a few tools. This is cheaper for you and less stressful for your dog. Bath your dog in a nice smelling dog shampoo. We love Bugalugs (below) but if your pet has sensitive or itchy skin go for Johnsons skin calm dog shampoo.

A stripping knife can be used to de-shed your dog. What this does is it runs through the fur and brings out lose hair resulting in less shedding and your dog being cooler. These are available in right handed and left handed tools:

You can then get a small pair of dog grooming scissors and use these to trim the fur around his bum and his face (especially if you have a long haired Jack Russell. It is also handy to trim the excess hair between their paw pads, but only if necessary. Some JRTs hate having their feet messed with! Curved dog grooming scissors with a safety end are the best and safest to use.
